Rotating Curriculum is a system designed to organize a school’s curriculum in a way that the curriculum is not tied to a certain belt rank, but is divided or grouped according to phases, levels, or different programs of training to black belt.
For example, your intermediate classes might consist of purple, blue, and green belts in your system. It does not matter what order a student learns each section of material; they will learn all three ranks’ curriculum before they get their brown belt and move into the advanced class.
Let’s say student A is a new purple belt and comes into the intermediate class, you maybe starting to teach what used to be green belt material. But, now you are teaching the same material to all three ranks. After graduation student A becomes a blue belt, now he learns what used to be purple belt material, then finally when student A becomes a green belt he learns what used to be blue belt material. The order is not important; it is that the student knows everything a brown belt should know when they enter the next level class. There are several variations to this system to meet individual schools’ needs, but all of them will give you the same results.
The benefit of organizing your curriculum this way is now you have three or more ranks in the same class learning the same thing. You no longer have to divide the class into groups for their new material, so it does not take three instructors to split the class up. This means less payroll and greater net. This is really important for those schools that don’t have the funds for a large staff of instructors, or for the school to maximize their net profits.
If you do not have a rotating curriculum, when it comes time to divide up the class, you have to spin the plates so to speak, and spend a few minutes with each group while the others practice. This brings me to the next benefit, excitement! With all the students in a class working together on the same techniques, doing every move at the same time, responding and communicating with the instructor in unison with anchors and benefits. That’s a high-energy class.
Now it is possible to have your entire school working together for the goal of their next belt and graduate all at the same time. This is very important for retention. If a student knows that everyone in the school is receiving their next belt, that student will probably stay more focused on graduating on time. It is a very powerful thing to see three or four hundred students on a gymnasium floor doing basic techniques together. Then each graduating class comes up to perform their new material for their family and friends. This also helps with highlighting the different programs we have for students. At our last graduation we had over 400 students’ graduate and 2000 people sharing the excitement.
If your school is a part of an association that governs your belt requirements and testing, this may cause some difficulty in staying in sync with their group. Otherwise, no matter if you are a new school or an established school of 500 students, the rotating curriculum can bring organization, manageability, excitement, and a sense of teamwork to your school.

Your classes will be more educational and entertaining for the students and parents. Remember, your classes have to be the most exciting part of your student’s day! Rotating curriculum will help us achieve this goal. Instructors will be better able to pay attention to the details of the students’ performance. Your massive graduations will be more exciting and give you the opportunity to highlight all of your programs the students and parents may want to join in the future. You will need less staff, being more effective, and allowing you to have systems that will be easier to duplicate for your future expansion. Finally, less staff means less payroll, which equals a higher net that will allow more money for the owner and instructors.
